Prof. Dr.  Dres. h.c. Herbert Kronke

Professor Herbert Kronke, Former Secretary-General of UNIDROIT (International Institute for the Unification of Private Law), is Professor for Private Law, Commercial Law and Private International Law, University of Heidelberg, Germany (on leave) and Member of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague. He received his academic education in Germany and the United Kingdom. Following graduation, practical training and bar exam he took a Dr. iur. degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Munich (1979). After various years as fellow of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Private Law and Private International Law in Hamburg he took a Dr. iur. habil. degree (1987) in Trier (Germany). Simultaneously he was involved in research and lecturing at the universities of Bologna (1982) and Ferrara (Italy) (1987 to 1996) and at the University of California, Berkeley, Calif. (USA) in 1984/85. He was Visiting Scholar at McGill University, Montréal (Canada), in 1991/92. In 1996, he taught as Visiting Professor at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. (USA). In 1997, he was Visiting Professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre (Brazil). In 1999, he taught the course on conflict of laws (in the area of capital market law) at the Hague Academy of International Law. In 2006, the Law Faculty of the Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest (Hungary), conferred the degree of doctor et professor honoris causa upon him. In 2009, the UNIDROIT Governing Council appointed him Honorary Member of the Council in recognition of his service and the Organisation’s achievements during his tenure.

Professor Kronke is author of some 150 books and articles in the fields of the law of contracts, commercial law, company law and capital markets law, conflict of laws, international civil procedure and arbitration.

Professor Kronke is Co-Editor of “IPRax – Praxis des internationalen Privat- und Verfahrensrechts” (Bielefeld), a bi-monthly covering conflict of laws, international civil procedure and international commercial law, and member of the Board of Editors of “Contratto e impresa” (Padua), a quarterly on contract and business law. From 1998 to 2008 he was Editor in Chief of the “Uniform Law Review / Revue de droit uniforme” (Rome).

He is a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration, the German Institution of Arbitration and the Swiss Arbitration Association, the London Court of International Arbitration (European User Group), the panels of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration. He serves both in ad hoc, ICC and other institutional arbitrations.

Professor Kronke is a member of the following Academies and scientific consultative bodies: Member of the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law IACCL (2004); Member of the Académie International de Droit Comparé – International Academy of Comparative Law (2007); Academia Europaea; Advisory Council of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Private Law and Private International Law, Hamburg (Germany) (2004 - ); Member of the Curatorium, Xiamen Academy of International Law, Xiamen (P.R.C) (2005 - ).

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany conferred the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic upon him. The Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil honoured him with the Ordem do Rio Branco.
